Qualified Supervision in Florida for Mental Health Counselor Interns
Jennifer Colton, LMHC, MHC Qualified Supervisor
EMDR Therapist and Approved Consultant
Credentialed Alcoholism & Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC-2)
For Mental Health Interns
If you are close to graduation or have already graduated I would be delighted to help you begin your journey toward licensure! I am a board-approved Qualified Supervisor for Registered Mental Health Counselor Interns in the state of Florida.
My Approach
With my counseling clients I use a combination of modalities including CBT, psychodynamic, parts work and Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR). I have also been trained in couples work (Terry Real’s Relational Life Therapy - Level 1). In 2019 I trained in EMDR therapy and am now a Certified EMDR Therapist and EMDR Approved Consultant. I work with a variety of conditions but the main issues include alcohol/substance use and other addictions, trauma as well as anxiety and depression for adults. My background includes healing work which I started in 2001 and am a member of the Native American Church. Healing takes into consideration the whole person: mind, body and spirit to create balance in all areas. I am proud to have a cultural self-awareness and sensitivity to work with diverse groups of people. All cultures and genders are welcome.
My supervision approach is eclectic and I aim to provide a warm, collaborative and supportive environment that is also professional and structured. I integrate perspectives and techniques from different counseling models such as Cognitive-Behavioral, Adlerian, Family Systems, Parts work and Psychodynamic for the therapist to learn from the process. I will strive to help the therapist to honestly evaluate their work, counseling skills and personal issues that they encounter. Supervision will be a combination of reviewing cases, problem solving, discussing charts and documentation as well as offering ongoing support throughout our work together. Some of the topics we will cover in sessions are ethics, cultural awareness and sensitivity, objectivity and boundaries with clients, personal awareness, resilience and self care as well as building and maintaining rapport with clients.
Goals of Supervision
I am here to make life easier for you and help you every step of the way. I see this as a collaborative process. My goal is to help you go from being uneasy, overwhelmed and uncertain to:
I also understand what it's like to feel nervous about doing counseling and with navigating different situations. I know what it's like to work in agencies where supervisors are preoccupied. Many interns unfortunately go through experiences of not being respected or feeling overlooked in some of the settings. So I really want to make sure interns have a very positive experience with me as we move forward with the learning process. This is the most important thing for me as a supervisor.
